San Francisco Vein & Vascular Institute is proud to share that Dr. Daniel Nathanson, Chief of Vascular Surgery at CPMC, was recently invited to present at Sutter Health’s Virtual Grand Rounds. His lecture, “Transforming Knee Pain and More: The Emerging Role of Embolization,” highlighted the growing role of genicular artery embolization (GAE) in treating chronic knee pain caused by osteoarthritis.

Why This Matters for Knee Pain

Osteoarthritis of the knee is one of the most common causes of chronic pain and disability, affecting millions of people each year. While medications, injections, and physical therapy can provide some relief, many patients continue to struggle with pain and limited mobility. For those not ready for or wanting to avoid knee replacement, new minimally invasive treatments are making a difference.

Genicular artery embolization (GAE) is a non-surgical musculoskeletal (MSK) procedure that targets the inflamed blood vessels in the knee joint. By reducing abnormal blood flow and inflammation, GAE can relieve pain, improve function, and help patients delay or avoid knee replacement surgery.
